The Origins Of Cricket
No one knows when or where cricket was invented but there some evidence that strongly suggests the game was first played in a simple format by children during Saxon times. It wasn’t generally played by adults until the beginning of the 17th century.
The game continued to spread throughout England, with Yorkshire being noted as a regular game venue from the 1760’s. Scorecards were used from 1772 and since then an increasingly clear picture has emerged of the sport’s development.
Bowling styles were soon to change, and the ball began to be bowled in a more recognised fashion as opposed to rolled along the ground. It was in answer to the flighted, or pitched, delivery that the straight bat was introduced. The old “hockey stick” style of bat was only really effective against the ball being trundled or skimmed along the ground.
